Lecture «What is Galicia? From myth to brand»
Vasil Rasevych – historian, essayist, blogger, chief editor of texts online edition Zaxid.net, senior researcher of the Ivan Krypyakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies of NASU, a specialist in the history of Galicia of the Austrian period and the politics of memory in modern Ukraine
Forgotten in Soviet times Galicia experienced a real renaissance after independence of Ukraine. “Fashion” on Galician came not from the Ukraine, but from the literary works of German-speaking Galician authors, whose stories sounded special after the disaster of World War II . The basis of constructing of the myth of Galicia leagues literary topos, which started with nostalgic reminiscences, and subsequently was transformed into overt political instrumentalization. Glorification and idealization of Galician past were prerequisite for concluding a new national conciliar narrative and for creation of exclusive Galician project. The range of instrumentation fluctuated from “Galicia is the most Ukrainian Ukraine” and up to “Galicians are not Ukrainians”. The public displays of “galicianism” and its instrumentalization are the topic of the lecture.

Based on short stories by Vasyl Stefanyk “Stone Cross” and “Thief”. Galician peasant Ivan Didukh after futile attempts to get out of poverty decides to go to Canada with children and to try to find happiness there. On the eve of departure a thief sneaks into their house. Didukh invites guests for his punishment. At the last moment he forgives the robber, but the neighbors kill him. In the morning, in memory of himself, Ivan establishes a long ago stashed stone cross on the hill.

Lecture «Sovietization of Western Ukraine in Case of Cinema Politics»

Soviet annexation of Galicia, Northern Bukovyna and Transcarpathia in 1939-1945 found rapid display in the Ukrainian Soviet cinema. Having just occupied a part of Poland, the Soviet leadership sends there 250 copies of the Dovzhenko film “Shchors” for agitation of the local population. Dovzhenko was entrusted to shoot an agitational film about Bukovyna. At the same time, Western lands began to actively appear in the plots of new Soviet films. In the case of films “Wind from the East” (1940), “Oleksa Dovbush” (1959) and “The White Bird with Black Mark” (1970), we will observe the changes of the Soviet colonial rhetoric against the Western Ukraine.

In its third director work Yuriy Illienko explores the tragedy of poor Ukrainian family Dzvonars living in the Carpathian Mountains near the Romanian border in tne times of war and terror (1937-1947). Four brothers play in the village band, but a struggle between Ukrainian nationalists and supporters of the Nazis and supporters of Soviet power takes one band member after another: Petro joins the Red Army, Orest – the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and Bogdan stays at home. But the fates of the brothers are intertwined in love and struggle.

Lecture “Memory, Blindness and Insight: Galicia and its Masks the XX-th cent.”
Lecturer Iryna Starovoit – literature expert, poet, docent of the Lviv University and the Ukrainian Catholic University. Explores the culture and dynamics of memory about the twentieth century in Eastern Europe
Galicia of the first half of the twentieth century is one of the most dangerous, multilinqual, turbulent corners of the world. Between 1914 and 1944 the authorities had changed for 7 or more times, and terror and violence with varying degrees of intensity threatened, destroyed and moved people. Holocaust, ethnic cleansings, deportation depopulated Galicia and other people started a new countdown of living in old houses. The memory of this partially disappeared along with their carriers, and partly came under strict censorship. However, with the collapse of the USSR, with the change of generations and experience the previous “installation matrixes of memory” were broken. In the case of private, family or generational memory, it is still possible to heal through efforts of memories and autobiographies in different native languages. What then will our contemporaries in Ukraine get known?

Documentary Story of Alfred Shrayer, as he said, the only Jew who survived during the Nazi occupation of Drohobych. Shrayer was one of the students of the famous writer Bruno Schulz. During the occupation Shrayer passed through forced works and concentration camps and after the war returned to his native Drohobych. He became a famous musician and socio-cultural figure.

The film is based on the novel by Polish writer Julian Stryjkovskyi

The only current art full-length film based on the eponymous book by Bruno Schulz. The film has a surreal tale character, which like a maze mix places, times and people, the viewer sees the missed Jewish towns of the Habsburg monarchy era, is a witness of love and existential frustration the characters. Lecture “Between the Soviet city and the Galician village, the Lviv Rock of 1980-s and its hybrid vision of Galicia”
Lecturer: Bogdan Shumylovych – historian, head of the “Municipal Media Archives’ Center for Urban History, researcher of popular culture of late socialism.
Rock culture in Soviet Lviv emerged in the late 1960s and had different forms, from almost official “ansambles” to the alternative hippie bands. This environment was largely transnational, but its creators were united by Lviv, Galicia and love of music. Also the common feature of various authors and groups was their unability to create interesting, original and at the same time alternative (ie non-Soviet) Ukrainian-product. After the announcement of perestroika in the mid-1980s, rock music is no longer a taboo art and a rock club was established in the city. The band that was able to decolonize popular Ukrainian music from the snare of ethnographic, rural aesthetics and the stamps of Russian-speaking rock, was formed in this club. That was an urban culture that could mock its own rural “alter ego” and this culture had the power to change not only Galicia but also Ukraine.

The film follows the adventures of two Lviv batiars, Schepko and Tonko who should help the orphaned neighbor Krzysia. The complicating factor is her grandmother – an old Baroness Dorn, who is trying to attract her granddaughter to the granny. In the film, the main characters performed still popular in Lviv song “Only in Lviv” (original title – Lwów jest jeden na świecie).
